Eastern Cape

Overview: IDC Regional operations >

Eastern Cape

With its net approvals in 2012 amounting to R861-million in the Eastern Cape, the Industrial Development Corporation’s (IDC) funding was across a number of sectors, including the automotive industry, agro-processing and textiles with the majority of funding channelled towards the relatively new renewable energy sector.

In the renewable energy sector, the IDC funded a number of wind farms within the Eastern Cape as well as the DCD wind turbine tower factory in the Coega Industrial Development Zone.

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) with its Automotive Production and Development Programme, which aims to increase local production of light motor vehicles to 1.2 million a year by 2020, has greatly assisted the Eastern Cape automotive sector. IDC has supported this sector by providing financial assistance to the suppliers of the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This has enabled component manufacturers to increase their production value add as suppliers and for the OEMs to increase their local content procurement.

For the near future, the IDC Eastern Cape office is looking to support agro-processing projects which will assist in the rejuvenation of the irrigation schemes within the province and to finance the processing of natural fibres from sheep and goats. In addition, IDC aims to finance community forestry projects and concentrate on supporting the strong automotive sector within the province which can be expanded into other advanced manufacturing as component suppliers to the renewable energy sector.
